s some of you may know my husband is still in school. He will be graduating in just a couple of short months. I am super excited for him. Why am I telling you this? With graduation comes an impending move. Every job we are currently looking at is out of state. This means I will not be around SLC much longer. Don't worry too much. I will come around for some visits and scheduled events BUT I will not be booking senior, children, or family pictures past the 2nd week of May.

I am planning several mini sessions during the next 2 months. If you want pictures now is time to get them. With spring coming it is a wonderful time of year for pictures. If you want to schedule family pictures with me it will have to be during one of these mini sessions. I have several weddings coming up and I need to plan for engagements and bridals.

I thought I would post a before and after. When people book me they aren't just booking me for the few hours I spend with them. Most of my time is spent in front of the computer. One of the things that I love about photography is the creative process that occurs after my sessions with you. I have worked hard to make sure that I capture an image that is lit properly and composed beautifully but photo editing give me that extra buzz. In college I spend most of my time in drawing and painting classes. That is something that comes across in my editing. I love to add that little extra that makes the image come off the page. Sometimes I keep it subtle sometimes I get a little crazy. This is the typical edit I do for most of my pictures.

I took these of Nate the other day. He has had a rough month. First the stomach flu then he came down with a sinus infection and an ear infection. He is finally coming around but we have had a few rough days. I gave him a chocolate covered graham cracker and I have never seen him so dirty. These don't show how bad it was :)

I have felt so blessed this past year with my business. I have come such a long way. Just last March I had only booked 1 wedding for the whole summer and I was so excited. Now there are multiple projects that I work on every month. I have been lucky to follow my dream of being a photographer and have it work out. Doing what I do is hard work. You can ask my husband how much time I spend thinking of ways to improve my skill. Right now I am making a battle plan for this next year. I am so excited for the future. I have BIG plans for this next year. They will make me a better photographer and artist. I can't wait to begin. Please read this article. I think it will help you see what I do behind the scenes. Also I am revealing some of my future plans at the end so don't skip or stop reading ;)

Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and ability to control various factors during the image taking and making process. Photographers, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulate pixels. However, with flexibility comes a price. Digital camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating a work of photographic art.

We all know that you can go to the local Walgreen’s and pay a $1.99 for a print - as a client you may wonder why you may pay upwards of $50, $70, $90 for a custom photography print. Photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?”

The truth of the matter is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Much of the cost of a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot to do with the time, equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer not to mention expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

The cost of TIME
Approaching it from a time standpoint, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love. This photographer is traveling an hour to your destination to photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:
session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)

one hour travel time TO session

15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home

90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject

one hour travel time FROM session

30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer

30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images

2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images

1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering

2-3 hours time with client for ordering images

1 hour sorting through and checking order

30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery

30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped

any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

In this example, the time spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours - dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.The COSTS of Maintaining a Custom Photography Business:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip many of the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES to BANANAS:
Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $19.99 for an 8×10 “sheet” or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. In February 2007 leased photography retail space by a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ “professional” prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait services in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the “loss leader”.

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, “SAY CHEESE” experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I read this several months back. I have been tormented over raising my prices but I feel it is coming close. I truly feel that photography should be affordable and I will always strive to do it. The cost of running a business is huge and the cost of my time is even more important. I have a family that I am supporting. When I set my prices I was just starting out. I charged what I could to bring in costumers and to get referrals. Almost every wedding I have done this last part of the year has been from costumer referrals. I feel so blessed that people felt that my work was worth telling others about. I want to thank all of you. I have been given so much. So tell all those couples that you know that are engaged to book now to secure my current prices.

Now it is my turn to give back. I plan on giving away a wedding package to one lucky couple. I want them to be deserving of it. Tell your friend and family. Tell everyone you can. They will need to submit their story and reasons why they feel they deserve their day documented. I want to share my blessing with those in need. There will be some restrictions. The wedding must be within 30 miles of the Salt Lake Valley and it must be this spring/summer on an open date (yes I am lucky enough to have weddings already scheduled for this next summer). Utah Photographer: LAME!

Bitterness and wrath... well not that much wrath, but there is bitterness. So as you can see photobucket is lame and it has turned all of my pics into their advertisement. My account went over it's bandwidth for the month and pretty much that means they are lame. They want me to pay 24.00 to post my pictures up or I have to wait until the 9th to get them back. As some of you may know I am cheap and my husband it still in school so extra money isn't flying around. I would rather wait it out. Here is a small pic to make up for it. Keep checking back. I am planning a few mini sessions during November.

As I have said before I go back and forth between projects because I need fresh eyes sometimes. This is a gem I found from Brian & Sara's Wedding last month.

I had a wonderful time working with this family. They have some of the cutest kids I have ever seen. There daughter L was so funny. She is a little firecracker:) Here are a few on my faves from this session. I did a few black and whites but I just didn't have the heart to use them. The colors were so amazing.

This past spring I had 3 friends come to me within 1 week come to me and tell me they were pregnant. Each of them told me to keep it a secret for a little while. It was a fun time. This is the first of the babies. Baby S Was born last week to my friends Jon and Ali. We went up to visit them this week and I did a little session for them. He is so stinkin cute. I hope to post a few more in a couple of days :)

Alright I am super lame. I have been planning this for several weeks but this is the official announcement.

Mini Sessions

When: Saturday October 23

Cost: $75.00

Now you might be wondering "What do I get?" Well this is the best part. The mini sessions include a 30 minute session with me. You will receive 10 images on CD and 20 4x6 christmas cards.

The location is still undecided. This is because I am trying to take the weather into account. These will be semi-urban...meaning don't panic they aren't grunge or anything. I only have 10 spots to fill for this date. If you want one please send me an email. I will require payment before the session (that means you will have to mail me out a check). I will be doing this again in Nov but it will very limited. Tell your friends and family. This is a super deal. I will not be doing larger family groups with these sessions. Please email me if you have any quesitons.

There is nothing like a newborn. Baby J was so aware of everything. He was awake for most of our session. He only fell asleep just as I was getting finished up. He is so cute.

Holy Cow. I just spend almost an hour trying to post this blog. I don't know what is up but I am pretty frustrated right now:)

Alright...This is some of my extended family. They asked if I would do their family pictures. I was happy to do it. It has been years since I have seen all of them. I was so fun.

This is a special family I did a session with several weeks back. She is due in just a couple of weeks. Unfortunately the baby will be born with a severe heart defect and will only survive for a short time. Their faith is amazing. They are taking time to enjoy the little time they will spend with the baby. They already have so much love for this little soul. I feel lucky I had the chance to document this very special time for them. I am praying for you W Family.

Alright. I am being a little bad. I am posting this super fast because I am supposed to send these to my little sister who is in Spain. This is her best friend and I send her my blog post. As for anyone who is waiting to see your pictures. They are coming soon. Buying a new computer didn't resolve all of my problems. I currently cannot upload anything to my website. I also can't change large files of images into JPEGS like I used to. I think I have found the solution but it will be another day or so. Thanks for being patient:)

I'M BACK!!!! Thank heaven for my new computer. Alright...I am doing 1 post right now and then I am to work for the next several nights uploading a million session and burning a ton of CD's. I am hoping to be finished uploading everyone by the end of the week. Watch for my emails.

Alright. So don't think I am ignoring my blog or my clients. I have had 2 weeks with nothing but computer problems. I am finally giving in and getting a new computer...hopefully today. I Will have a ton of posts for you if everything goes as planned in the next few days. To all of my clients. I have emailed many of you but if you haven't received it just know that you will be getting your pictures and/or your CD and Books soon. Due to my lack of computer I have been using other people for internet access. If I haven't gotten back to you I promise I will by the end of this week. If you need something and it just can't wait give me a call and I will see what I can do. Hope all is well.

Alright. I am still having computer problems. Add to that my phone seems to be sending people to voicemail without ringing. I apologise for anyone who has tried to get ahold of me. Hello to all. I am sad to say I am currently having some computer problems. No worries to anyone. I double back up everything. It just means I can't post anything for a couple of days. Until I know that the problem has been taken care of I am not using my usual computer. Thus the editing will slow down and I wont be uploading your pictures to my website. I promise I will get your stuff up as soon as possible. For my dear clients waiting for your bridals and engagements I will get them to you in a timely manner. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
